Four (4) Basic Principles of Design and Layout

Principle #1: Contrast

  • Making important thing stand out .

  • Making important thing stand out design and creates visual hierarchy.

  • Calls the attention of the viewer/reader.

  • Using colors, bold, italics, underline, or changing font styles and size are example ways which designers can create a contrast.

Principle #2: Repetition

  • Applying consistency in the design .

  • Repeating an aspect of the design.

  • Acts as a visual key that unifies your design and help maintain the attention of the viewer/reader.

  • Using the same elements such as font style, font size, format or graphic are some examples of ways where designers an create repetition.

  • Repetition is seen in templates.

Principle #3: Proximity

  • Putting related items closely together and putting non-related items apart.

  • Puts structure and organization in the design.

  • Helps identify which items are related.

Examples:

  • Information on employee details is placed closely together.

  • Information on address is placed closely together.

  • Information on contact information is placed closely together.

  • Company name and website are placed far from other information.

Principle #4: Alignment

  • Making text easier to read through proper alignment.

  • How space is used, whether to align text to the right, left or center.

  • Giving order and strength in the design.

  • Different alignments have different effects.

Principles of Visual Message Design using Infographics

What are Infographics?

  • Information that is presented in a graphic visual form.

  • A visual image that can quickly send a clear message.

Principles of Creating Effective Infographics

Simple is better

  • Don't over do it.

  • Make your Infographic: Clean, Concise and Clear.

  • Information should be well organized.

  • Readers should easily comprehend the visual message.

  • Beware of overwhelming the reader with so many things going in the Infographics.

  • Too much information and too much visuals can be a distraction and cause confusion.

Less is more

  • Keep text in a minimum.

  • Avoid giving readers lengthy text to read.

  • A short explanation may be enough to convey you message.

  • Go straight to the point.

Creativity

  • Add that special touch to your infographics.

  • Try different combinations of illustrations, images, charts, icons, diagrams and typography.

  • Experiment with colors, fonts, shapes and white space.

  • Highlight important words with a creative font in contrast to a neutral font.

  • Use images to emphasize information or to explain a meaning.

Uniqueness

  • Use something unexpected.

  • Do not limit yourself with a basic bar graph or chart.

  • Video clips can also be an infrographic (Example: Whiteboard Animations and PowerPoint Presentations).

  • Make it fun and entertaining especially if the topic is heavy information.

Color Schemes

  • Apply the psychology of color in your color selections.

  • Color is an important part of an infographic and effects the reader's emotion and impressions.

  • Color selections does not have to be colorful and can work in little variation.

  • Color enhance the information and helps create visual hierarchy.

Focus on One Central Idea

  • Begin with an end in mind. "What is the takeway message?".

  • Explain the relationship of cause and effect, for every effect there is a cause.

  • Infographics helps spread awareness if readers are aware of the cause.

Researh Facts and Figures

  • Make sure your information can be backed up by data and can be verified.

  • Your infographic should be trustworthy with reliable sources.

  • Cite your sources and include links if available.

Organization

  • Make your infographic easy to navigate.

  • Create a narratice script of flow on how you present the data effectively.

  • Tell a story and end with a conclusion.

Make it worth sharing

  • You want your infographic to go around the web.

  • The way you can relay your information to the other people is whe n people share your infographic .

  • Include links and call-to-action reminders that will make the reader share the infographic to their social networking sites.

  • Sharing the infographic should be easy to do (i.e., reblog, share, forward buttons).

  • If the call to action invlolves too many links, a lot of people will disregard sharing your infographic even if it was designed really well.

Principle of Image Manipulation

Successful image manipulation is making it as realistic as possible

Choosing Images

  • Not all photos can be easily manipulated, you should choose a clean that can be easily rendered.

  • Avoid blurry images and choose images that are sharp.

Rendering Images

  • When cutting images we don't want rough edges or evidences that the photo was taken from different background.

Combining Images

  • Choose the right image that will fit with the design you want to create.

  • The background, the objects, the people etc. should be in harmony with your design.

Adding Shadows

  • Every item that need a shadow should have a shadow.

  • Duplicate the image, change color to black, add Gaussian blur, adjust the size and move it to the ideal place where the shadow is expected to be seen.

Proportion

  • Proportion and placement of objects makes a huge difference on how realistic your image will be.

  • Images, that are far, are smaller that the images that are closer.

Texture

  • Blending is important in image manipulation and choosing th right texture and other images.

  • Texture add depths and will set the mood for your image.

Color Blending

  • Color blending helps to match an image with your background texture and other images.

  • Photo filters and gradient maps help add or remove color in images and help with the blending of your image to other objects.

  • Tip: Identify first the colors in your image that already blend together and then manipulate the colors to blend with others.

Attention to Details

  • Identify the certain spot where you want to draw viewer's attention.

  • Tip: Focus on the part of the image where the colors are more vibrant or sharp. This portion of your image will be one to stand out.
