Introduction to World Wide Web

Updated: Oct 16, 2018

What is World Wide Web?

an information system on the Internet that allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to search for information by moving from one document to another.

What is the difference between the Internet and the Web?

The Internet is an infrastructure that connects users together. These users may range from companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter to end-users like you and me. The Web, on the other hand, is a huge collection of information, data, and resources that facilitates communication between users and computers. The Web uses the Internet as its medium to transfer or exchange data with remote users. The Web also uses a client-server model to manage the traffic.

What is a Client-Server Model?

The Client-Server Model is a networking model where the client requests resources from the server. The clients are usually connected to the server via network infrastructures like Local Area Network, Wide Area Network, or the Internet. In the context of Web, the client is the user, and the server is the Web server.

What is WEB 1.0?

In 1989, The Father of World Wide Web, Tim Barners-Lee, proposed the creation of standardized information management system, which eventually gave rise to Web 1.0 are static pages, meaning users cannot interact with the page and the page in read-only format. It delivers content in a single direction, where in the site owner is always contributor, and the users are always the audience.

What is WEB 2.0?

  • A collection of applications and technologies that make it easier for people to find information and connect with one another online.

  • Provide users with deep and rich experience

In 2004, Tim O'Reilly, in his official site, that Web 2.0 is a Web that "Build applications that harness network affects to get the better more people use them." (http://radar.oreilly.com/) In fact, the most noticeable change from Web 2.0 is that Web 2.0 is more dynamic. This means that the site owner no longer dictates what the content of the website should be, instead, users contribute to the contents. The importance of community is emphasized, as contrast to companies deciding what to put as content to their web pages. Users are encouraged to participate and contribute to the content by commenting, sharing, tagging, etc. Web 2.0 is considered more flexible compared to Web 1.0, hence, may of the websites today use Web 2.0.

  • Web 2.0 allows the users to interact with the page known as Dynamic Page; instead of reading just a page, the user maybe able to comment or create a user account. Dynamic Page refers to the web pages that are affected by user input or preferences.

KEY FEATURES

Folksonomy- allows users to categorize and classify.arrange information using freely chosen keywords (e.g.tagging). Popular social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, etc. Use tags that start with a pound sign (#) or hashtag.

Reach User Interface- content is a dynamic and is responsive to user's input. An example would be a website that shows local content. In the case of local networking sites, when logged on, your account is used to modify what you see in their website.

User Participation- The owner of website is not the only one who is able to put content. Others are able to place a content on their own by means of comments, reviews, and evaluation.

Long Tail- services are offered on demand rather than on a one-time purchase. This is synonymous to subscribing to a data plan that charges you for the amount of time you spent on internet or a data plan that charges you for the amount bandwidth you used.

3 IDEAS

1. Application Platform

2. Democratization of the Web

3. Distributing Information

Web 2.0 Ideas

1.Using the web as Application Platform

- Provide a service rather than a product.

Example: Facebook Example: Twitter

2. Democratization of the Web

- Refers to the way people access and contribute to the internet.

Example: Wikis/Wikipedia Example: YouTube

3. Distributing Information

- User’s will receive updates from any application.

( games, websites, social media)

Example: Wikis/Wikipedia Example: YouTube

  • The Next Fundamental change in how website are created and more importantly, how people interact with them.

  • People call it “The Internet of Things” and Smart home appliances connected to wireless network”

  • Also known as Semantic Web

What is Web 3. 0?
  • Tim Berners - Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989

  • Tim Berners - Lee vision of the future Web is similar to the concepts of Web 3.0

  • Is like searching for movies and food faster and easier

  • Act as personal assistance, as you search the web, the browser learns you are interested in.

  • Every user will have a unique internet profile based on the user’s browsing history

  • Its foundation will be Application Programming Interface ( API)

Example: Facebook API

- allows developers to create program that use Facebook as staging ground for games, quizzes, products, reviews and more.

It’s trends is the Web 3.0 Mash_Up

  • A combination of API and program created by programmers.

Web 3.0 MORE Intelligent
  • It represents all kind of content/data that can be easily understood, no matter which computer/ program is used.

Web 3.0 Mobile Platforms
  • Web 3.0 frees the user from websites and turns the internet into a repository of useful applications that works on various kinds of platforms.

Web 3.0 Social Bookmarking
  • This would give more accurate results as you would be seeing website which have been voted on by humans and so your chances of finding better and more relevant websites are increased.

Web 3.0 Artificial Intelligent

  • AI imitates human behavior.

  • Is an extension of the web where content expressed can be processed independently by intelligent software agents.

  • These software agents use specific search criteria from the user to find the perfect content to present on the user screen.

Web 3.0 Virtual Games

  • With the popularity of online games such as League of Legends and virtual worlds some people believe Web 3.0 might set out the foundations for virtual world with building others to interact with.

Convergent Technology

  • Is when new technologies are created that take over from past technologies and perform the same task but in a more advance manner.

Social Media
